A little birdie told me...

My friend and I had other plans when we started out this sunny Saturday morning. We were heading to Crafternoon, a child-friendly Carlton cafe who's menu not only features coffee and poached eggs, but also craft activities such as badge making, play dough and crayons and paper. Although I was thoroughly intrigued by this concept, when we arrived we felt as though we were lacking something (2.5 children) so we decided to wander up to a reliable favorite.

(Note to self - Visit again with someones kids in tow to make some badges!)

Enter Birdie Num Nums. Just up the road from Crafternoon is another child-friendly cafe equipped with a sandpit and covered seating out area the back. Inside though, it doesn't feel quite as much like a Prep classroom. It features a fireplace, polished floor boards, high ceilings and a case of delicious sweet and savory bites.

But the thing that keeps bringing me back to Birdie Num Nums is the Birds Nest Breakfast, now up on the blackboard as the 'Breakfast Special'.

It involves: two poached eggs rolled in dukkah sitting on top of a mound of baba ganoush, on top of toasted pita bread slices, all sitting on a rocket and almond salad. ($14)

No words can describe my love for this plate of culinary goodness except:

You. Must. Try. It.

Aside from the deliciousness on the plates, I was a little disappointed that I was told their chai tea was made from leaves, but on receiving it realized it was most likely made from syrup or powder as my friend commented that she could smell the sickly sweetness from the other side of the table.

Overall a sweet cafe with good atmosphere, great for cute baby watching and yummy food. Not so good for authentic chai tea.
